THE SHAPES OF RHYTHM

Notes

A musical note represents a sound. Its position on the staff tells you its pitch; its shape tells you its relative duration. Note values organize rhythm, while tempo determines their length in seconds.
Explore ten note values from maxima to hemidemisemiquaver. In this catalogue, each value lasts half as long as the one before it.

Maxima and longa are historical note values. The durations shown here use binary division. In early mensural notation, their values could vary with the mode.

THE PATTERN CONTINUES

Beyond the sixty-fourth note

The next value is the semihemidemisemiquaver: a 1/128 note with five flags. Halving can continue indefinitely in theory: 1/256, 1/512, 1/1024, and so on. There is no mathematical smallest positive note value; very short values are rarely practical, and names vary.

11NOTE VALUE1/128

Semihemidemisemiquaver

Five flags halve the sixty-fourth note again, giving a one-hundred-and-twenty-eighth note.
